The Common Good

by Carol Masters

When a WAMM friend said that providing for the Common Good was part of our Constitution, I blinked. “Surely not,” I demurred. We’d been discussing why on earth corporate-led capitalism, backed by military might, was the basis of U.S. domestic and foreign policy; maybe the Common Good should be a guide.

It seemed to me that in most religions and social theories, foundational principles call for taking care of one another – but was this principle part of the U.S. Constitution? The document that protects individuals and minorities from the oppression...

Orange Jumpsuited Torture Protestors March To St. Thomas Law School
Why were people in orange jumpsuits silently filing through the Minneapolis skyways? The answer may be ten years old, but those in the jumpsuits will tell you the problem is not in the past, but is a current one.

January 9, 2012 was the 10th anniversary of the memo that gave President George Bush the right to ignore the Geneva Conventions and authorize torture. Authors of the memo were Robert Delahunty, now a St. Thomas Law School professor and John Yoo, now a University of California at Berkeley law professor. Local peace activists have demonstrated against Professor Delahunty ever since he joined St. Thomas in 2004.

Many believe that the Delahunty-Yoo memo led directly to the torturing of prisoners at Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib prisons and many other human rights violations by American troops.

The “enhanced interrogation techniques” are reported to be continuing.

Stop Legislation Leading to War on Iran
The “Iran Threat Reduction Act” (HR 1905) passed on Nov. 2 by the House Foreign Relations Committee criminalizes U.S. diplomacy, making it illegal for U.S. diplomats to engage their Iranian counterparts. The bill would make it illegal for any American diplomat to speak to or have any contact with an Iranian official unless the President certifies to Congress that not talking to the Iranian officials "would pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the vital national security interests of the United States" 15 days prior to that contact. This bill is beyond extreme as it binds the hands of the President and our diplomats, setting our foreign policy in a very dangerous direction which could lead to war, as it would prevent any diplomacy to keep U.S.-Iranian incidents or crises from spinning out of control, unless the crisis conveniently stretched beyond the fifteen-day notification period.

The bill also strips the President’s authority to license the export of civilian aircraft parts and repairs for Iranian civilian aircraft to prevent needless civilian deaths, imposes indiscriminate sanctions that would increase gas prices and hurt the Iranian people, and will result in a a rise of oil prices worldwide, eventually hurting U.S. consumers.

Minnesota cosponsors of this bill are Reps. Michele Bachmann, Chip Cravaack, John Kline and Erik Paulsen. A corresponding bill has been introduced in the Senate (S1048), cosponsored by Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken.

417 Days. Thousands of Miles. Hundreds of Conversations. On a Bike.
Winkler-Morey: Pedalstory.
WAMM member Anne Winkler-Morey on a 417 day journey around America.

From the Blog:
January 19

John Wayne is still an icon in these parts. In East Texas we went to a café where Jesus Christ and John Wayne were co-themes. In Alpine, his likeness is painted on a huge mural in downtown. For you young’uns and those not from Texas, he is an actor who played the part of the hero of the wild west who showed up at the last minute, and saved the day and got the girl.

We spent the day with a real live modern day west Texas hero; Liz Rogers, Federal Public defender of West Texas. About 80% of her clients are immigrants. Her immigration cases used to be primarily people who crossed the border without documents looking for work.

More and more however, people are coming to escape the violence. They say ‘get me a two year jail sentence if need be, just don’t send me back: I’ll get killed.’

Liz noted that the level of violence in Mexico is at the point where it should be considered a failed state. “I feel like its 1939 and I’m sending Jews back to Germany. We need a refugee program for Mexicans today.”...

Palestinians have lived under an illegal Israeli occupation since 1967, preventing them from establishing their own state on their homeland.

There are now millions of Palestinians who are refugees due to Israel's refusal to recognize their right under international law to return to their own homes since 1948.
