Save Coldwater
by Sue Ann Martinson, Preserve Camp Coldwater Coalition and WAMM
The Preserve Camp Coldwater Coalition--a coalition of advocates, neighborhood groups, and the Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota--is engaged in efforts to prevent the sale of Historic Camp Coldwater to the Metropolitan Airports Commission. The coalition asserts that the Department of the Interior (the current owner) should give this historic land the status of a park.
The coalition believes that the refusal of the government to listen to requests of the Dakota people is systemic and institutionalized racism and that the sale of this land is a violation of civil rights.
Stop the sale of Historic Camp Coldwater to the Metropolitan Airports Commission. Sacred Sites are not for sale: This land is the geographical area of the creation story of the Dakota Nation, and a ceremonial site for the Sauk and Fox, Anishinabie and Potowatamie peoples. The refusal of the government to listen to requests of the Dakota people is systemic and institutionalized racism. The sale of this land is a violation of civil rights.
Camp Coldwater is the Birthplace of Minnesota, original home to the people who built Fort Snelling. The Preserve Camp Coldwater Coalition--a coalition of advocates, neighborhood groups, and the Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota--is engaged in efforts to save this sacred and historic site and to preserve the landscape of our common heritage, the greenway along the Mississippi and the last great spring in the Twin Cities.
