Word Up!

"I think most people know that announcements from government officials are always lies, distortions, half-truths, or concealments. Probably our leaders don't have any better ideas about stopping terrorism than the rest of us do. Politicians' greatest fear is not terrorism, but the fear of not keeping their offices. They need to make us believe that they know better than we do.

"A hundred years ago L. Frank Baum wrote a book called The Wizard of Oz. It is an allegory. Dorothy and her friends represent the common people. The wizard, who represents political leadership, kept his power with smoke and mirrors. He had no idea how to defeat the evil witch, who represents fear. When Dorothy's dog Toto pulled the curtain and revealed him as a con man, Dorothy and friends summoned up enough courage and common sense to defeat the evil witch. Let us do likewise."
