The Movement for a Moratorium

by the Welfare Rights Committee

As recession deepens, the five-year lifetime limit on public assistance is an unfolding catastrophe for low-income Minnesotans. Every month more families are cut off survival assistance. On July 1, 2002, over 5000 families, including up to 15,000 children, will hit the five-year lifetime limit. This is a plan for hunger and homelessness. It is also the reason why it is vital that the Minnesota Legislature pass the proposed moratorium.

State Senators Linda Berglin and John Hottinger have agreed to sponsor a bill to put a moratorium on the time limit. Nearly 150 organizations (including WAMM) have signed on in support of the moratorium. You can show your support, too, by calling your elected officials and by attending the Welfare Rights Committee's Day on the Hill event on Monday, February 18, 2002.

WAMM Action!

The Stop the Five Year Limit Coalition is calling for a moratorium on the five-year limit placed on families receiving public assistance. Please call your elected state officials and let them know how you feel about the five-year limit and the moratorium proposal. Call today and repeatedly over the course of this legislative session.
