According to Ellen C. Collier of the Congressional Research Service, the U.S. "used its armed forces abroad in situations of conflict or potential conflict or for other than normal peacetime purposes" on 234 occasions between 1798 and 1993.

University of New Hampshire professor Marc Herold's research indicates that 3, 767 Afghan civilians died in the current U.S. war in Afghanistan between October 7, 2001 and December 7, 2001. He calls his figure a "very, very conservative estimate." The BBC reports, "The figure is well in excess of the estimated 2,998 people killed in the 11 September attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center."
