Education cuts are military madness!

In the wake of public debate over a $30 million cut in the Minneapolis public schools budget, WAMM member Anne Winkler-Morey sent a letter to the Star Tribune. Here is a brief excerpt:

We are told that we do not understand finances if we dare to . . . wonder about the ethics behind the new math that asks us to subtract teachers and add pledges of allegiance at a time when corporate profits, military budgets, and social and economic pressures on students are all multiplying. We are considered uncooperative citizens if we refuse to accept $30 million in education cuts when we live in the richest country in the world. We are told that our calculations are irrelevant to the debate when we point out that cuts in our national education budget are falling at the same ratio as the political rhetoric about educational standards is rising.

"Good citizenship is not about aiding in the deprivation of our children when tax dollars for war continue to rise."
