Take Action Against the War

by Lisa Ann Pierce, WAMM

“I can't think of an example in the entire history of Europe, including the United States, when there was ever protest of any substantial level before a war. Here you've got massive protest before war's even started. It's a tremendous tribute to changes in popular culture that have taken place in Western countries in the last 30 or 40 years. It's just phenomenal.” –Noam Chomsky

Wondering how you can get involved with the burgeoning movement to stop the war on Iraq? Here are some simple ideas:

1. Put your opposition to this war on the record.

Put a “Say No to War” lawn sign in your yard or window. Two sizes are available from WAMM for $5 and $10. Pick up at the WAMM office 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. For additional pick-up times and sites (including Duluth!), call 612-827-5364.

Talk about the war with your family members, your community of faith, and other groups.

Write a letter to the editor of your community newspaper.

If you are a young adult, create a file that documents your conscientious objection to war. Conscientious objector information packets are available at the WAMM office.

Put an antiwar bumper sticker on your car or bike rack (available from WAMM).

Wear a button or T-shirt that expresses your feelings about the war (available from WAMM).

Join Code Pink: Women in Peace in wearing the color pink on Wednesdays. Let people know that you are wearing pink because you oppose the war and are concerned about attacks on our civil liberties.

2. Hold the government and the media accountable.

Call or write the White House and voice your opposition to this war. White House comment line: 202-456-1111. The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20500.

Call or write Secretary of State Colin Powell. Insist that the Administration utilize the tools of diplomacy rather than the tools of war. U.S. Dept. of State Public Communication Division: 202-647-6575. Sec. of State Colin Powell, 2201 C St. NW, Washington, DC 20520.

Write or call your senators and representative. Ask them not to consider war a foregone conclusion, but to continue to exercise their leadership in pursuing alternatives to war. Call the congressional switchboard at 1-800-839-5276 or 202-224-3121. Contact information for the Minnesota congressional delegation is available at www.worldwideWAMM.org or 612-827-5364.

Let the media know how you feel about their coverage of the war and the antiwar movement. Contact information for Twin Cities media is available at www.worldwideWAMM.org or 612-827-5364.

3. Take action with others against the war.

We will hold a nonviolent demonstration if and when U.S. hostilities toward Iraq escalate to war. On the day that news of the attack is reported in the morning newspaper, gather at the Federal Courts Building, 4th Street and 3rd Avenue, downtown Minneapolis, at 4:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Iraq Peace Action Coalition, including WAMM.

Join a weekly vigil for peace. WAMM cosponsors a weekly vigil on Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30 p.m. on the Lake Street/Marshall Ave. Bridge in the Twin Cities. There are more than thirty active peace vigils in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. For more information: www.worldwideWAMM.org or 612-827-5364.

Participate in antiwar protests and peace rallies. Bring your friends. Join the WAMM Action! e-mail list so that you will receive up-to-date information about upcoming protests and rallies.

Find a partner and make a presentation on Iraq for your community of faith, school, or other group. Or, organize an event and invite a speaker who has traveled to Iraq. For resources and speakers, call the Twin Cities Campaign to Lift Sanctions, 612-522-1861 or Friends for a Nonviolent World at 651-917-0383.

Organize in your neighborhood. The Twin Cities Campaign to Lift Sanctions offers community action kits. Call the campaign at 612-522-1861.

Join WAMM and/or other peace and justice organizations! Donate your time, talents, and money as you are able. For more information: www.worldwideWAMM.org or 612-827-5364.
