This summer, WAMM is conducting a pilot project entitled Intercultural Action for Peace. As a part of that project, we are excited to have four college students to assist with outreach initiatives that focus on promoting peace and social justice through intercultural exchange. This is a service learning opportunity designed to partner WAMM with students, universities, community agencies, and organizations. Each student will have a WAMM member to serve as a “Wise Woman Guide” (mentor).

The following are excerpts from brief autobiographical statements written by the interns:

Mai Chao Lee is a second-year student at the College of St. Catherine, majoring in criminal justice and minoring in communications. “Attending a justice outreach trip really engaged me to discover and see other sides of communities and how they are organized.”

Brooke Jacobs is a third-year public relations major and women’s studies minor at the University of Minnesota. Her ultimate goal is to start a feminist magazine. “I’m incredibly excited about my internship with WAMM because I have a profound desire for peace and equality.”

Shvonne L. Johnson is a native Minnesotan. She began her personal journey for social justice and change as early as thirteen through her artistic expression as a poet. “I intend to plant seeds of lifelong development by seeking a degree in social studies education at Metro State University. As an intern of WAMM, I will cultivate my surrounding community by means of spoken word, organization,
communication, empathy, love, and compassion.”

Laura Wilson is originally from South Dakota, born to writer and activist parents. She soon became rooted in a love of peacefulness, nature, and balance. “After participating in a Witness for Peace delegation in Nicaragua, I began to blossom as an activist. I am a third-year student, majoring in social justice with a concentration in global conflict, and minoring in English. I am also seeking a certificate in Spanish.”
