Education and empowerment are core values in the mission of WAMM. Involving students in critical educational opportunities around peace and justice issues is a part of making real that mission. This fall we have eight interns at WAMM: Firas Narch, Nakida Gillespie, Shiva Adhikari, Jillian Emerson, and Duong Nguyen from Hamline University; Shvonne L. Johnson from Metropolitan State University; Ayla Mia Graden from Watershed High School; and Stacey Larson, a recent college graduate.

This past summer, interns participated in the WAMM Intercultural Action for Peace and Justice Project, which started as a pilot project focusing on promoting peace and justice through intercultural exchange. By engaging students in service learning, we are able to partner with universities, community agencies, and organizations to provide an opportunity for students to learn more about WAMM and how activists work for social change. The internships allow students to integrate and enhance their academic curriculum and community experience, meet community-identified needs, foster civic responsibility, take advantage of structured reflection time, and participate in an environment of shared learning.

This fall, interns will engage, individually and collectively, in a number of different projects, including a feasibility study for the development of a WAMM newspaper, research on the environmental issues women face in war from multiple cultural perspectives, the development of a WAMM youth caucus, and the continuation of WAMM’s Intercultural Action for Peace and Justice. WAMM interns, along with WAMM staff and volunteers, gather each week in the WAMM office to discuss progress on their projects, share experiences and ideas, decide on future actions, and build community by sharing a common meal and solidarity around our work.

Staff members working with this project are Lisa Pierce (WAMM newsletter editor), new WAMM staff member Anne Graham (WAMM office manager and volunteer coordinator), and Paulette Sankofa (WAMM director and intern coordinator). We are seeking WAMM members to serve as volunteer mentors for our interns. If you are not available to serve as a mentor, consider hosting lunch for one of our weekly reflection circles that take place on Tuesdays, beginning at 11:30 am. For more information call at 612-827-5364.
