Lucille’s to Remain Open
It was feared in September that Lucille’s Kitchen would have to close because of financial difficulties. The owners arranged deferred payment plans with some creditors, obtained a low-interest loan from a city program, and received contributions from friends and a fundraiser. The restaurant, at 2013 Plymouth Ave. N. in Minneapolis, serves soul food and hosts live radio programs on public issues such as racism, poverty, crime, and economic development.

Courts Rule Against Bush
The four following court decisions went against what Molly Ivins has called the “delusions of grandeur” of the Bush Administration. First, the president alone cannot detain U.S. citizens as “enemy combatants.” Second, the enemy combatants being held at Guantanamo cannot be denied the right to seek court review of the legality of their detention. Third, the statute that criminalizes undefined “material support” to designated “terrorist organizations” is unconstitutional. Finally, weakening the Clean Air Act by executive order is unconstitutional.

Khmer Rouge Leaders to be Tried
UN and Cambodian officials have reached a tentative agreement on steps to establish a tribunal to try two former Khmer Rouge leaders. One of the men acknowledged for the first time in December the genocide of the former regime, which is blamed for the deaths of 1.7 million Cambodians.

U.S. Human Rights Network Launched
More than 50 U.S. civil liberties and social justice groups have joined forces to address “the alarming rate of human rights violations in the U.S.,” particularly as they relate to the war on terrorism. The effort marks the 55th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

Depleted Uranium Investigated
The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has begun investigating the link between depleted uranium use in ammunition in Bosnia and Kosovo and the occurrence of leukemia and other forms of cancer. The UNEP preliminary report recommends that “relevant sites in Kosovo be sealed off and that medical checks be carried out” on people near those sites.
