As the U.S. firestorm of occupation swept across Iraqs ancient land of Babylon, our Twin Cities Babylon faced its own fire. On January 16, 2004, the Babylon Arts and Cultural Center on Lake Street burned. The collective had provided space for community meetings, performances, and filmsa political art space where artists and activists could interact. The gallery focused on politically motivated art representing people vilified or ignored. Much of the art at the Babylon was lost in the fire.
Artist and Babylon founder Meg Novak is determined to rebuild the Babylon. A $75,000 fundraising campaign is underway to secure a new or renovated space and an operating cushion to get reestablished. Tax-deductible contributions to the Babylon Collective can be sent c/o Meg Novak, 1522 Carroll Ave., St. Paul, MN 55104.
