Rabbis Denounce Demolitions
Two hundred and fifty rabbis have written a letter denouncing the demolition of Palestinian houses by the Israeli government. Their letter also protested the arrest of Rabbi Ravvi Arik Ascherman, executive director of Rabbis for Human Rights, who stood in front of two Israeli army bulldozers poised to begin demolition.

Bush Under Fire
Domestically, the heat under the Bush Administration has been turned up dramatically. All these issues are under scrutiny by the press and/or the Congress: the “intelligence” about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, the “leak” of a CIA agent’s name in apparent response to criticism of government “intelligence,” the “intelligent” handling of Pentagon contracts with Halliburton, and the accuracy of reports about the president’s service in the National Guard.

India and Pakistan Open Peace Talks
The governments of Pakistan and India, both now in possession of nuclear weapons, have agreed to discuss their differences.

Blix Awarded Olof Palme Prize
Hans Blix, former chief UN weapons inspector in Iraq, won Sweden’s Olof Palme Prize for his work in trying to stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction and to promote “security in accordance with international law” (Times of India). Known for his independence and ability to resist political pressure, Blix now also serves on a new international commission to prevent the spread of WMD’s. More online. (www.truthout.org.

World Social Forum Draws 100,000
The World Social Forum in Mumbai, India, drew 100,000 people from 132 countries, the largest number since 2001. There was much discussion about the negative effects of the U. S. “War on Terrorism” on the well-being of humans, animals, and their environments worldwide (The Nation).

Protesters Take On Smithsonian
In December, demonstrators protested the display of the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, at the Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy center at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C. The display failed to mention loss of life caused by the bombing of Hiroshima (The Progressive).
