Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now: WAMM Youth Initiative

Shvonne L. Johnson, W A M M

There has been a recent addition to WAMM: the question “WYI?” The question “WYI?” can be summed up in a few words: WAMM’s Youth Initiative.

Ayla Graden and I have collaborated our efforts to recruit youth between the ages of 14 and 23. The reasons are simple. We want to open the door of membership to high school and college youth at the low cost of $15. We want to encourage the commitment of youth interns and volunteers in the office on a day-to-day basis. We want to connect with youth that are driven by the spirit to dismantle the “system of -ism” that oppresses. We want to develop awareness in schools by mobilizing specific students to exercise leadership and skills on their campuses. We want to encourage dialogue among youth about issues that affect their present lives as well as their immediate future. Mostly, we want to encourage action upon the wrongs that are suffered by the peoples of the world and in this local community.

By the time this article is published, WAMM will have hosted the Youth Initiative kickoff on March 19, 2004. We are expecting 15 to 25 students at this initial event, which will be held at Sabathani Community Center. The night will include food, music, spoken word, and visual art. Contributors to the program include Silas Girmay, Carrie Clamecki, and Fatimah, who will share some of their experiences as activists in the making.

The featured speaker of the evening is Chris Nissan, who has made himself quite a reputation in the community with his involvement in the peace and justice movement. We are hoping this evening is just the beginning of creating long-lasting connections that will take the struggle for social justice to another level. If you or someone you know is interested in the WAMM Youth Initiative, please contact Shvonne or Ayla at 612-827-5364.
