Connecting Poverty, Racism, Militarism, and War

Paulette Sankofa, W A M M

Momentum continues to increase in the WAMM Intercultural Action for Peace and Justice Project. It is our goal through this two-year project to strengthen the leadership and constituency of WAMM and grassroots community participants by fostering a supportive, affirming, and inclusive environment for local peace and justice work, drawing connections between the issues of poverty, racism, militarism, and war.

In April, WAMM is partnering with the Resource Center for the Americas, Insight News, the University of St. Thomas Critical Pedagogy Doctoral Program, and Sin Fronteras Video Production for a critical forum on the issue of globalization and aggression against Haiti, Venezuela, Cuba, and nations in Africa. This event will take place on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at the Resource Center of the Americas. More details will be available at www.worldwidewamm.org and from the WAMM office, 612-827-5364.

The Intercultural Action for Peace and Justice Project also includes increasing WAMM’s anti-racism work, intercultural critical dialogue, knowledge sharing, and relationship-building between individuals and communities in the peace and justice movement and broader community. The following circle groups have formed:

Intercultural Sisters Gathering (facilitated by Vivian Jenkins Nelsen): This circle of women of varied cultures and ethnicities meets monthly (circle full).

Circle of Healing, Peace and Justice (facilitated by Vivian Jenkins Nelsen): This circle of women and men of varied cultures and ethnicities from the peace and justice movement meets monthly (circle full). A new circle will start in April, 2004. Please contact the WAMM office if you are interested in participating.

Harambee African Ancestry Women’s Circle (facilitated by Paulette Sankofa and Katie Sample): This is a circle of African-ancestry women that meets quarterly (circle open).

White Toolbox (facilitated by Erika Thorne):
This circle of women of European ancestry will meet monthly, beginning in April (circle open).

WAMM Youth Initiative (WYI) (facilitated by Shvonne Johnson): This is a circle of youth, male and female, high school through college age (circle open).

Lesbian/Bisexual/Queer Women’s Circle (facilitated by Lisa Pierce): This circle of lesbian, bisexual, and queer women will meet monthly, beginning in April 2004 (circle open).

In June 2004, all circles will gather for a collaborative meeting to share learnings, celebrate, and
plan our second annual anti-racism month in September 2004.
