Mordecai Vanunu Released
WAMM members Nick and Mary Eoloff were among those waiting to greet Israeli Mordecai Vanunu at the end of April, when he was released from an 18-year incarceration in a prison near Tel Aviv, Israel. The Eoloffs, who had adopted Vanunu, had hoped to bring him with them on their return to St. Paul. However, the terms of his release did not permit him to leave the country.
Vanunu was convicted for revealing to the world that Israel was manufacturing nuclear weapons (Israel is believed, today, to have up to 300 warheads). At his arrest, he revealed that he was trapped by a CIA agent and kidnapped by the Israeli secret intelligence agency, Mossad.
Israeli officials say they are fearful that Vanunu will reveal additional nuclear secrets, although the nuclear technician has said he has none. However, his release will remind the world of the existence of Israels nuclear establishment.
Near the time of Vanunus release, representatives of the 188 nations that have signed the Nuclear Weapons Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) gathered at the UN. Israel, along with Pakistan and India, was called upon to destroy its nuclear arsenal and join the NPT nations. They are the only non-signatories to the treaty.
Lee Calls for TRUTH Commission
Rep. Barbara Lee (Dem., CA) issued the following statement at a press conference on May 5, 2004: United, we will not stand for the injustice of Haitis 33rd de facto coup détat, which brought Prime Minister Latortue to office. CARICOM, the people of the Caribbean, and members of Congress demand that an investigation into the ousting of President Aristide and the truth behind the Bush Administration regime change foreign policy be brought to light. I have called for a TRUTH Commission, which stands for The Responsibility for Uncovering the TRUTH about Haiti. That commission would be independent and bipartisan, and it would uncover the Bush Administrations role in Haiti not merely around the days of President Aristides exile, but systematically undermining the Haitian government during the three years before February 29."
