Sovereignty and Globalization: Afro Latino Indigenous Resistance

Paulette Sankofa, W A M M

On Saturday, April 17, 2004, Women Against Military Madness, the Resource Center of the Americas, and Friends for a Nonviolent World allied with SinFronteras Productions to sponsor “Sovereignty and Globalization.” The day’s events began at the Resource Center of the Americas with a screening of the film Eye of the Hurricane and a panel discussion on globalization from the perspective of people of color. The dialogue also drew connections between issues in the Caribbean and South America with those being faced by people of color in the United States.

A central theme emerged: The development of an authentic peace with justice movement requires renouncing the old divide-and-conquer game, forming critical alliances between people of color, and making room at the table for people of color in the dominant culture peace movement. It is no longer acceptable to approach peace and justice work with a missionaries-seeking-to-save-the-people attitude.

Human rights activist Chucho Garcia, founder of the AfroVenezuelan Network, was the guest speaker for evening event. Chucho spoke passionately about the need for resistance to global oppression and set forth a call to action for unity. Garcia referred often to a poem read at the event by poet and WAMM board member Shvonne L. Johnson. Her poem set the tone for the evening:

I am overwhelmed...

Globalize food and equality

Globalize healthcare and freedom from abuse and degradation

Globalize the central belief that all people of all races have worth, resilience and the potential of life.

Globalize the belief that the talents that rest inside every human being are worth more than oil.

I am overwhelmed as imports and exports become more valuable than heartbeats and creativity.

The event also featured Danza Mexica and Wain McFarlane with Ipso Facto. The entire event offered much food for the heart, mind, and spirit. It culminated with a circle of healing.

Co$t of War

“In a transparent effort to mask the true costs of war and reduce the size of the mounting budget deficit the White House left funding for Iraq and Afghanistan out of the 2005 budget it submitted on February 2. Since that time, the ‘administration has steadfastly maintained that military forces in Iraq will be sufficiently funded until early next year.’

“From the beginning, military officials predicted that the Administration’s game playing would create problems. . . . As predicted, it was revealed last month that, without additional funding, U.S. troops would face a $4 billion shortfall as early as this summer. [In early May], the President was forced to come clean and request ‘an additional $25 billion to finance military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.’”
