Breaking News

Jane Evershed, W A M M

I am immersed in alternative news and views. Most news is focused on the details of global male escapades that are causing mayhem, and is delivered by other men, mostly white guys who make a living from talking about it all, whether from the left, right, or middle. (Usually the news is introduced by some blonde bombshell with really scary eyes, though not always.)

My point is this: What is the use of knowing all these details of male antics on a minute-by-minute, breaking news/blogosphere basis if nothing is done to change anything? The women's seat at the table of global consequence still sits empty. Just 33 percent female representation on any governing body sways the budget toward the more humanitarian aspects of rule, such as health and education. Women also tend to take the budget pie out of the oven before the testosterone ruling bodies of recent history burn it with over half the entire budget allotted to the military.

A new format is waiting in the wings, as all news is caught in a catch-22 story of problems with no solutions. We want to be informed, yes, and we need to know what is going on in our world. But, quite frankly the news presented to us is almost exclusively about what men are doing and saying, while "gorgeous" women deliver their stories on TV as if they represented the concurrence of all women (which seems to be most subliminally effective).

The jig is up! We need those men who align themselves with the empowerment of women to address this issue as an introduction to every global crisis story, every local rape, and every drive-by shooting. The day of the authoritarian male is over. We know better! The female gender, by its very nature, sees that global male domination not only hurts women and children, but many millions of disenfranchised men, too.

We are dealing with major natural disasters as a consequence of a global economy almost exclusively shaped by the men who run it. While working to empower women, we must also be careful that women do not end up being the only ones to clean up the mess that has been made in the global bachelor pad. We need a lot more news dedicated to solutions, sustainability methods, and to the healing of this planet.

Next time you hear a male "expert," listen to see if he genuinely understands that women need to be represented en masse in positions of real power. He would say something along the lines of: "You know, patriarchy just doesn't work anymore, we need the balance of men and women across all cultures, working together to solve this problem." (You can name any problem.) If he doesn't do this, turn him off. That would be a 53 percent drop in ratings right there, and then it would be showtime for women!
