A growing number of groups and individuals are speaking out against the war in Iraq. According to one poll, 6 in 10 Americans want U.S. troops to come home. Perhaps the building pressure will hasten an end to the war.
An August USA Today/CNN/ Gallup Poll shows declining support for the war.
By a 56-41 percent margin, Americans believe some or all U.S. troops should be pulled out of Iraq; 33 percent (a record) said all troops should be pulled out.
By a 57-34 percent margin (another record), Americans believe the Iraq war has made the country more vulnerable to terrorist attacks.
By a 54-44 percent margin, those surveyed said the Iraq war was a mistake, and by a 56-43 per cent margin, they felt the war was going badly.
President Bushs disapproval rating is at 51 percent; 45 percent approve, up one point from his lowest rating.
According to a Newsweek poll taken the weekend of August 12, Bushs approval rating for handling the Iraq war dropped to a new low of 34 percent. This is similar to President Lyndon Johnsons low rating of 32 percent for his handling of the Vietnam War in March 1968. |
