WAMM introduces a new committee called T3: Tackling Torture at the Top

Our goal is to raise awareness about the involvement of medical, military and legal professionals working for the U.S. government in the practice of torture and to hold those professionals accountable for their involvement. Part of our effort is to call to account the University of St. Thomas Law School for hiring as a law professor who helped write memos providing legal justification for the use of torture.

We contend that his advocacy constitutes evidence of a conspiracy to commit torture at the highest levels of government, and also is a breach of professional ethical obligations. Moreover, his prominent involvement in creating and justifying U.S. torture policy runs contrary to the law school’s Mission, which highlights the school’s “focus on morality and social justice.” Torture is morally wrong, and it is a violation of U.S. as well as International Law. All nations have an obligation to hold officials who have committed war crimes accountable. A law school that emphasizes “morality and social justice” should not be hiring people who have justified torture. Contact WAMM if you are interested in being involved with our group.

Word UP!

iKings had always been involving and impoverishing their people in wars, pretending generally, if not always, that
the good of the people was the object.
—Abraham Lincoln

I’m often amazed at the way politicians, who spend hours poring over opinion poll results in a desperate attempt to discover what the public thinks, are certain they know precisely what God’s views are on everything.
—Simon Hoggart

Those in possession of absolute power can not only prophesy and make their prophecies come true, but they can also lie and make their lies come true.
—Eric Hoffer
