On February 26 the Minneapolis School Board voted unanimously to restrict military recruiters to the schools’career centers and stated that they had to sign in when they were on campus. Also included were provisions that required recruiters to call before they were coming and allowed career groups that incorporated peace to also be at the career centers. Unfortunately, restricting recruiters did not pass in St. Paul.
The night of February 26 was supposed to be for taking the vote only, because there were two previous meetings that involved testimony. However, the recruiters where blindsided and given false information that the board was voting to ban military recruiters from the campus. So, as you can imagine, one of the three recruiters who showed up came to the table to give testimony of how he was upset that the school board was banning recruiters. The board had to stop him and explain the actual resolution and how the process worked.
Surprisingly, the board then opened it up to discussion again. Of course, there were two war veterans who had to give their Bill O’Reilly/Rush Limbaugh talking points, but they were no match for the many students and two Vets for Peace who spoke from the heart. Six of the board members gave their thoughts on the resolution and said how impressed they were with the organizing and words of the students. And then they cast the votes. All seven voted in favor! It was wonderful, and gives me hope. |
