WOMAN
A speech to the European Parliament on International Women's Day 2005 given by Dr. Nurit Peled-Elhanan, an Israeli mother. Her daughter, Smadar Elhanan, was 13 years old when she was killed in a suicide bombing in Jerusalem in September 1997. In 2001 Dr. Peled-Elhanan received the Sakharov prize for her peace advocacy and this June she spoke at the World Peace Conference in Vancouver.

Thank you for inviting me to this today. It is always an honor and a pleasure to be here, among you (at the European Parliament). However, I must admit I believe you should have invited a Palestinian woman at my stead, because the women who suffer most from violence in my county are the Palestinian women. And I would like to dedicate my speech to Miriam R`aban and her husband Kamal, from Bet Lahiya in the Gaza strip, whose five small children were killed by Israeli soldiers while picking strawberries at the family`s strawberry field. No one will ever stand trial for this murder...

Walls Do Not Work
Fall 2005
W A M M decries the savage fear mongering against and persecution of illegal immigrants.
CPTer Kim Lamberty worked in Hebron last fall and spring and has worked with the Arizona team since May. Random ID checks. High intensity light surveillance. Low level helicopter flights. Infrared sensors. Vehicle checkpoints. Officers patrolling on foot, horseback, jeep. Lines of people detained by the roadside until they clear computer checks of citizenship and work permit status – some are arrested, some are prosecuted, some are deported.

These scenes describe life in Palestine. They also describe life on the U.S.-Mexico border...

Imprisoned Bethlehem declares itself open as part of new international initiative to aid city
November 17, 2005

The Open Bethlehem Project was launched in the US at a news conference at the National Press Club on Thursday, November 17, 2005. The initiative is designed to transcend the imprisonment of the city by a combination of the illegal wall and militarised fences, with only two gates to the outside world. Chief Executive, Leila Sansour, makes a particular appeal to Christians worldwide in the lead up to Christmas. "If Christianity can not survive in the birthplace of Christ, it is in jeopardy everywhere"...

"O Little Town of Bethlehem. How still we see thee lie..."
While people in the United States and the western world sing a favorite Christmas carol, here's a look at the current reality and a testimony to the spirit of people isolated and trapped in the biblical city...
The current situation in Bethlehem is grim. The walls and fences that encircle Bethlehem have turned this 4000 year old city into a prison for its 160,000 citizens. These photos of the wall demonstrate how an occupied people, the Palestinians, keep their wit and hope alive in the face of such brutality.
