Students and Parents of Female
and Male Students in Grades 11 or 12
Don't Kill! Don't Die! OPT OUT!
Stop Your School from Supplying
Private Information to Military Recruiters
In accordance with the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, high schools are required to release the names, addresses and telephone number(s) of students in grades 11 and 12 to military recruiters, unless their parents have refused to release this data to military recruiting officers. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protects the privacy of student education records.
In addition, Minnesota State Statute 13.32 Subdiv. 5a Military Recruitment has been amended as follows: A secondary institution shall release to military recruiting officers the names, addresses and home telephone numbers of students in grades 11 and 12 within 60 days after the date of the request, except as otherwise provided by this subdivision. A secondary institution shall give parents and students notice of the right to refuse release of this data to military recruiting officers. Notice may be given by any means reasonably likely to inform the parents and students of the right
.
As stated above, in accordance with the Minnesota State Statute, schools should be notifying parents and students. However, method of notification is up to each school district, and how the school district notifies you may not be obvious and will vary from district to district. In addition, it is important to note that schools maintain student information in their databases and will need time to change them. So, if you wish to opt out, deliver this form to your school district immediately.
Students or parents interested in opting out need to turn in a signed form each year for both the 11th and 12th grades. Students age 18 or older can sign them. No gender distinction is made in the definition of student.
If you dont want your childs name, address and telephone number(s) to be provided to military recruiters, complete and return the form below. This form is specific only to opting out of having your students school provide information directly to military recruiters.
